Pond Component: "My existence has been as the reflection of the moon caught in the water gathered in the palm of the hand, about which one doubts whether it is there or not." Tsurayuki

The pond is considered the heart of the garden in the Japanese culture. The Japanese name for pond is kokoro which literally means the heart of things. Therefore many ponds are shaped to resemble hearts or to resemble the ideogram for shin or new heart. Size is not a large consideration, therefore a pond does not have to be overwhelming large to be part of a good Japanese garden. A smaller more intricate pond can be just as intriguing as a large

one. Since the Japanese consider the pond to be the heart of the garden, they often design the entire garden around the pond, and start off with the pond and work outwards. When putting a pond into a garden, there are many things that have to be considered by the garden designers. Will there be fish in the pond? Where is the source for the water? Will a waterfall feed into it? As you can see there are many things to ponder before putting a pond in.
