Diet Mountain Dew is Not Good

For years, I have enjoyed a regular Mountain Dew every now and again (read: almost every day), but I have long since recognized that I need to cut it out of my diet. It simply has too much sugar. One 20 ounce bottle of regular Mountain Dew has the equivalent of -- get this -- 19 sugar packets in it. (And you thought you put a lot of sugar in your coffee.)

So, in an effort to cut back while still getting my caffeine fix, I recently purchased a 12-pack of diet Mountain Dew, which has 0 grams of sugar. That's right, nothing. The whole thing is Nutrasweet. Well, you know what? No sugar is pretty much the same thing as no taste. Diet Mountain Dew tastes almost exactly the same as Diet Squirt, Diet Sprite, pretty much every diet drink out there. That is, it tastes kind of like citrusy carbonated water mixed with Equal.

In other words, it does Not Taste Good.

*sigh* I don't know what to do. Should I go back to regular Dew and just make sure to limit the other forms of sugar in my diet? Or should I just down a NoDoz in the morning? I know it would give me a jolt, but it seems somewhat boorish to just pop a pill.

  • I've always thought pill popping in order to get a caffeine buzz was rather...odd. I don't know, it just doesn't feel right.

It seems fine and dandy in liquid form, but just the whole idea of popping caffeine pills is repugnant to me on a less than rational level.

I knew a few of my fellow high rankers in high school used to pop Excedrin before tests. Apparently there is 65 mg of caffeine in normal strength excedrin, which is about the amount of caffeine in a standard cup of coffee. Take three of those, and you will be hopping like a maniac.

How much is in NoDoz? I've never heard of that product before.

That was surprising to me. I had no idea the caffeine content of mountain dew was so high (55 mg for a 12 oz can if I recall correctly.)

So a can mountain dew has almost as much caffeine as a cup of coffee? Interesting.

And I agree with you on the Diet Mountain Dew. If I had the choice between caffeine withdrawls and Diet Mountain Dew, I would go with the caffeine withdrawls.

All in all, I am in a similar predicament when it comes to obtaining caffeine. I dislike the high price and sugar content of soda, but Diet Soda really doesn't do it for me. I'm thinking of taking up coffee drinking. It's cheap, warm, and doesn't have any sugar in it.

Now the only problem is that I don't like the taste of coffee. Oh well, I'm sure I will learn to love it.

In a way, coffee is just like Diet Soda, only cheaper and with more caffeine.

    ¡Viva la cafe!

So gradually introduce coffee as a replacement for Mountain Dew. That is my plan. Maybe I'll do coffee one day out of three, then bump it to one day out of two, then bump it to every day. I don't know.

  • Ugh, my comments are always longer than the original post I am commenting on. Brevity has never been my strong suit.

  • do NOT give up the dew. sugar is good for you. caffeine gives you life. all of these things are good. enjoy them. they are god's gift to you.

  • Something else to consider: I quit drinking my daily 20oz mt dew and lost 10 pounds (and I didn't think I was overwieght - being a male at 175lb) I did nothing different other than that. The caffeine withdrawal was bad for a week or two, but now I can (occasionally) drink 5-6 oz of Mt dew and get a really buzz!
