Why liberals are so angry
Last week, a Republican friend and I watched the second presidential debate with a group of Kerry supporters. One trait these supporters all had in common? Anger. Pure, unadulterated anger at Bush, the Administration, the Republicans, Fox News, and anyone who supports any of the above.
After the debate, my friend asked me, "Why are liberals so angry all the time?" A wonderful question. This is what I told her:
1. They are bitter. By all accounts, they won the popular vote in 2000! That, plus the 5-4 Supreme Court decision ending the recount in Florida, understandably leads them to believe Bush and his cronies stole the presidency. Whether that's actually the case is debatable, but it's definitely a reason for democratic partisans to be angry all the time.
2. They believe that Bush is stupid, which adds insult to their injury. I used to think Bush was kind of stupid until I realized that he's just no good at public speaking. Lately, for some reason, I have been getting quite flustered when I have to present my political views in public, and defend the actions of the president. Now, I know I'm a good public speaker, but for some reason I come off as a complete doofus when I open my mouth. I don't know why this is, for I know that I am quite intelligent in writing. In any case, I can see how the liberals believe -- albeit mistakenly -- that Bush is a "stupid dumbass," as the JibJab parody goes. :-) If I believed my president were an idiot, I would be angry also.
3. Half the country fully supports Bush. This rankles the Dems because they now believe they are living amongst utter fools. They don't see how everyone can be so gullible. They don't see how everyone can support an Idiot. They feel they are Better than the rest, and it is supremely unfair that those who are Better are not in Power. This angers them.
4. Liberalism is mostly about emotion. I'll admit, on gut instinct, I would support lots of social welfare programs run by the federal government. After all, the feds have such an ability to do Good! But then the logical, rational part of my mind speaks up, and I realize that such programs are a Bad Idea for many reasons. But the liberals don't have that rational part of their brain. When their bleeding-heart programs get blocked by an Evil Stupid Republican, they get very angry because they're all emotionally wrapped up in it. This is also why liberals are known to rip up / pee on Bush signs, and deface cars with Bush bumper stickers. Obviously, it's only a few Democrats who act this way, but note that virtually NO Republicans do this. Liberals are angry because they are emotional about the causes they support, and rational disagreement infuriates them.
I'm sure there are more reasons behind Liberal Angriness... would anyone care to comment?

I would argue that many, if not most, of political sign vandalism is not done primarily for political reasons. They aren't usually looking to make a statement, but just want to have fun.
Since most of this vandalism is done by a younger demographic, they are more likely to choose Bush signs over Kerry signs. This decision probably doesn't stem from deep political hatred. They just want to vandalize something, and being younger, they tend to dislike Bush more than Kerry.
Also, where I live, I tend to see big huge signs in support of Bush on the larger, more rural estates. I see fewer huge signs in support of Kerry. Since these huge Bush signs are placed on large parcels of land, the house is far from the road. These signs are the crown jewels for vandals because they are both conspicuous and less risky than their urban counterparts.
I should state that I'm neither Republican or Democrat, but I do have Democratic leanings more often than not. Also, I'm angry at Bush. :)

Hey buddy, I want to link this post but I can't figure out how to link directly to this? Also, how do I link directly to your blog? The front page takes a long time to load so I'd rather go here first.

Matt,
I'm kinda scared now because I've said the same things to my friends as you just said in this post, almost verbatim. Um. Yeah.

"Liberalism is mostly about emotion"
This is patently untrue in the context in which you're using it. In the U.S. today, you have conservatives (i.e. most democrats and moderate Republicans) and you have reactionaries. That being said, people who are actually liberals, like me and a few Democrats, understand that national health care would save money, in addition to being a decent thing to do for society (to my recollection, the u.s. has really expensive per capita spending on health care); that social security keeps old people from going into poverty; that trillion dollar tax cuts are poor prioritization of resources; that environmentalism is no longer an option but a necessity b/c the earth will run out of resources; same with renewable fuel sources; and that this war was a poor choice (there are about 10,000 better things to do with the money even if it were dedicated to fighting terrorism and/or "spreading freedom" and/or securing oil sources).
The basis of left politics (actually all politics) ought to be decent emotions, but it's the lack of awareness of most Americans about international issues, how they've been brainwashed into believing that the media is too liberal, etc. that makes me angry, in addition to having millions of people without health insurance.

this last presidential election showed me just about how far our power hungry left is willing to go. Slander, lies, hell they did everything sneaky thing they could barring an assination attempt on our president, which they all but called for. Especially in New York during the GOP convention. They pulled out all their big shot actors and musicians to stir the vile stew of their hatred and propaganda. These foul scum were hoping to reap from the hatefull seeds they have sown ever since their boy Gore lost to Bush in 2000. I am very thankfull that there were enough people with common sense in this country that did not buy into the blatant lies generated by the left
