O, Illustrious denizens of Megatokyo: I implore thy help. I am but a lowly English major at Case Western Reserve University, but do desire a greater understanding of that which is l33t. In researching this phenomenon for a semiotics paper, I’m asking for anything anyone knows, thinks they know, or just thinks about l33t. Tell me what you think about how l33t developed, how or why it is used, or just show off your 1337 }{4x0|2 abilities. Thanks.

I thought everyone knew where l33t came from. Also, please stop using it. Please.

It started off as an underground inside joke, it never was serious, and then it got big (too big?). Kind of like AYB.

Megatokyo has a weird brand of 'L337' substitutes a lot of "composite letters" for letters which drives me insane. Prior to Megatokyo, all L337 I had seen was a mix of a few letters for numbers, random capital letters within words and generally bad grammar+spelling. Nobody ever intended for it to be typed into whole paragraphs letter for letter from English.

Ok this is what Im talking about. This is not legible, you cant "get" the joke if it takes you 3 minutes to decipher each word and even then a lot of it is guess work.

what the hell is this??? "(n)"

Yes don’t use l33t too much it is very hard on the eyes and may cause flame damage to the person using it. I would only recommend using l33t to exaggerate things like ph33r or f34l. Just don’t use it to be "cool" it is not and probably will never be again.

From what i understand and extensive research done:

Elite: THis is how it started, this was used to describe the hackers who could outsmart the CIA, they were the elite

leet: Why type out elite when you could type out lite, but since that is a type of beer, lets make it leet because it's only easier and it sounds better.

l33t: Sice those hackers have nothing better to do, and they want to keep the investigators on their toes, they type like this... no.. it didn't work to well, did it..

l33t for the masses!: Now come message boards, and the l33t h4x0r5 start typing in this all the god damn time, then people learn it, then the perma-newbies come in and are like "HEEEEY WHATS THAT?!?!?" and the oldbies say "it's l33t..." then the perma-noobs start speaking in l33t everywhere they go because they think it's cool, when it' sjust fucking annoying...

Edit: But then again, writing in l33t on the chalkboards at school is a fun.. cuz the teachers come in and get confused, and it's just funny to watch...

I'm sorry, you seem to think that I'm moderating. I'm just banishing people who write entire sentences in 733t speak to the fire of eternal torture until they realize that it isn't funny or cool to use 733t speak all the time. Outside of the comic where it is used for humour value I've never seen Piro or Largo post entire messages in 733t(though this is irrelevant, they can whatever they want ).

Yours wasn't too bad, and I probably over-reacted...but I had a point to make.

733t_speak_sentences == bad;

yes, everyone. i agree. 1337 is a perversion, an atrocity, a... dumb... thing. why can't everyone speak the king's english like i do?
however, people Do speak 1337. generally idiots, (or people with a sense of humor,) but
1. Why do they?
2. Who uses it, (a description beyond labels of n00b5, 114m3r5, or aol users.)?
3. Where did this god forsaken dialect start?
4. and if you hate it so much, why is it so funny?

thanks.

I'll assume the flame of eternal torture did you some good
1. I honestly don't know, aside from using "733t" and "ph34r" occassionally I use VERY LITTLE 733t speak.
2. People who are trying to be funny/cool, though they are being more annoying than anything else.
3. I beleive it was hackers trying to hide from search engines originally. Now it is mostly used by gamers and people making fun of script kiddies(could be wrong on this, it's been quite a while since I was gaming).
4. Poor question, those two things are not in any way related. It is funny because used in moderation it pokes fun at the people who use it seriously(or in the case of the guy from the comic, it's a running gag). I hate it because people keep using it to try to be funny/cool, which it isn't(unless of course you're another person who likes a 733t sentences, then it is hilarious).

trying to be constructive.

back in the days, elite may refer to people who do the 'good work' but it also refers the general elitist attitude that was sort of an unwritten code. Like knights are suppose to be chiverous, hacker/crackers/etc are suppose to be elitist. When it's used, the word doesn't have the same negative connotation (even though it might result in that). The evolution of elite to 1337 took a while to take off, but i know it was in general bad taste and lame to actually use l337 talk... Only random sprinkling was acceptable. This was my understanding of it back about 8-10 years ago.

also, of course 1337-ness doesn't just involve transforming letters into symbols and numbers. it also involved capitalization, other ascii symbols, and/or colors. And as mentioned before, spelling too.

What is your problem guys? So l33t started off as a joke by hackers... so what?
So l33t was never intended for entire paragraphs... neither was IRC intended for file sharing.
Those people have chosen to use l33t.
It's their life, so why can't you just leave them be?
So if they think l33t is cool, why do you have to bash them?

I think a lot of different people use l33t, but in different ways. I either use it to mock lamers, or just with certain h4xx0r-related subjects. I think that l33t is neat because it was relatively obscure (and still is, to a greater extent), and it's always fun to have an inside joke to share with people. Once it starts getting out of hand, then it just fades into the realm of Pop Culture Obscura, and something new pops up to takes its trendy place. Such is the way of the world, and keeping in touch with these trends can be an adventure in itself.

thanks kirby, i agree. the origns of l33t are interesting, but not limiting. if it has evolved into something larger now, bully for it.

and the inside joke part of it is Certainly relevant... as far as i can tell the "point" seems to be telling other people how much better you are than them. if others can understand what you have "said" than the two of you can make fun of others together. if not, you are Obviously the 1337357.

users of l33t can then be divided into 1. those who make fun of it, using it for humor/sarcasm/irony whatever, and 2. those who Believe in it, and use it, presumeably because they lack and desire some sort of superiority, so they try to be as inscrutable as possible to prove how great they are.

but i'm just guessing here... is this blatently wrong, or am i missing something?
