If an effort to provide software and information
support
to the growing numbers of Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) users within
the
MetroHealth System (MHS), PLUG (PDA Library Users' Group) has developed
the MetroHealth
System PDA Download.
The MetroHealth System PDA Download (MHSPDA.EXE) if a self extracting
ZIP file that contains software and information for your PDA.
This
software and information will be helpful to you if you are using your
PDA
within the MetroHealth System for medical purposes. The software
and
information in MHSPDA.exe can be broken down into three general areas,
as
follows:
1. Software and instructions for installing publicly available,
clinically useful software, included with the MHSPDA.EXE file.
2. Software and instructions for installing information, such as the
MHS telephone directories, into your PDA.
3. Instructions for installing publicly available, clinically useful
software,
for which the actual software CANNOT be included in the MHSPDA.EXE file
for
technical reasons.
To install MHSPDA.EXE follow these instructions:
1. Click on the following link:
http://home.cwru.edu/~dck3/MHSPDA.EXE.
2. Save the file to your C:/Palm directory.
3. When the download is complete, Open/Launch the MHSPDA.EXE file in
the
C:/Palm directory by double clicking in the MHSPDA.EXE file, if the
file
does not start automatically.
4. When the WinZip Self-Extraction window opens, select the OK button.
5. After the WinZip Self-Extraction is complete, you should follow the
instructions
in the README.TXT file that should be open on your computer desktop.
If
the README.TXT file is NOT open on your computer desktop, go to your
C:/Palm/MHS
directory and double click on the README.TXT file to open it. The
README.TXT can also be accessed using this link:
README.TXT.
Your PDA must be running Palm OS 3.0 or higher to use this download.
You must have your PDA registered through Steve Grove (
sgrove@metrohealth.org) in
the Harold H. Brittingham Memorial Library to use MHSPDA.EXE..

required to use your PDA within the MHS (size ~125K) (version 2.35)
To install any of these programs follow these steps:
1. Open your PDA desktop software (Palm.exe Program found generally in
your C:\Palm directory).
2. Under the View tap at the top, select Install.
3. Select the Add button.
4. Go to the C:\Palm\MHS.
5. Select the *.prc file that you want to install by clicking on that
file once.
6. Press the Open button.
7. Repeat steps 5-6 until you have installed all of the *.prc files you
are interested in.
8. Press the Done button.
9. The new programs will be loaded onto your PDA the next time you
Hotsync.
Instructions for installing information files included with the
MHSPDA.exe file:
MHSPDA.exe included the following informational files:
1. MHSpeople.csv - a comma separated text file containing about 3300
addresses all the people and their telephone number and pager number
information, as listed on the MetroHealth Information Village (MIV)
telephone directory (size ~270K).
2. MHSplaces.csv - a comma separated text file containing over 300
telephone numbers of places within the MetroHealth System, including
consult pagers for those services that have a standard consult pager
number (size ~20K).
If this is the first time you have tried to set up the MHSpeople.csv
and MHSplaces.csv files on the computer you have downloaded these files
to you will need to follow the steps below. If you previously set
up these files links on this computer, you will NOT need to follow
steps below. The updated Address Book entries will automatically
be updated the next time you Hot Sync your PDA. To create the
files links and install these files for the first time, follow
these steps:
1. Open your PDA desktop software (Palm.exe Program found generally in
your C:/Palm directory).
2. Go to your Address Book in your PDA desktop software.
3. Select the HotSync tab at the top of your screen.
4. Under the File tab at the top, select File Link.
5. In the File Link window, select Create a New Link
6. In the Create a New Link window, the Application Name should be
Address Book (default), the File Path should be
C:\Palm\MHS\MHSpeople.csv, and the Category Name should be MHSpeople.
7. In the Create a New Link window, select Next.
8. In the Specify Import Fields window, select OK.
9. In the Confirm you Link settings, select Done.
10. Repeat steps 3-9, except in step 6. the File Path should be
C:\MHS\MHSplaces.csv, and the Category Name should be MHSplaces.
11. The new address information will be loaded onto your PDA the next
time you Hotsync.
Instructions for installing PDA software NOT included with the
MHSPDA.exe file:
The following software is free and has been found to be VERY useful
clinically, however, cannot be included with the MHSPDA.exe file for
technical reasons:
ePocrates (NOT ePocrates Pro which costs ~$60) - a free drug reference
Guide (like an electronic version of the pocket Pharmacopoeia).
ePocrates takes up about 2.5 MB of memory on your PDA.
To install ePocrates you will need to go to the ePocrates web site at
http://www.epocrates.com.
Follow the instructions for ePocrates Rx.
These instructions will require you do create an account.
Once you have created an account you will be instructed to download and
install to ePocrates software.
You should allow ~30 minutes to create the account and download and
install the ePocrates software.
Once you have installed the software, it will automatically update
itself when you HotSync your PDA through a computer connected to the
internet.
John Hopkins Antibiotic Guide - a free antibiotic reference guide (like
an electronic version of the Sanford Guide).
The John Hopkins Antibiotic Guide takes up about 1.5 MB of memory on
your PDA.
To install the John Hopkins Antibiotic Guide you will need to go to the
web site
http://hopkins-abxguide.org/download_center/download_center.cfm.
Follow the instructions for PalmOS.
These instruction will require you do create an account.
Once you have created an account you will be instructed to download and
install the John Hopkins Antibiotic Guide software.
You should allow ~15 minutes to create the account and download and
install the John Hopkins Antibiotic Guide software.
Once you have installed the software, it will automatically update
itself when you HotSync your PDA through a computer connected to the
internet.
The MHSPDA.exe file was prepared as a service by the PDA Library User's
Group (PLUG). We are always looking for additional
information/software to include with the MHSPDA download. All
