Preparations

26OCT2004 :: 10:10pm :: Okahandja, Namibia :: Bedroom
Today was a day of preparations for the big international board meeting which starts on Thursday. Had corn flakes and milk for breakfast; we had real (Kellog's) corn flakes, not the generic African kind (we're easing ourselves into it). It was also the first time we had Namibian milk, and it was pretty good. We were apprehensive, because it doesn't have to be refrigerated until it is opened. After breakfast was our daily staff meeting and prayer time. Following that we got right to work. Kate headed to the office with Joe to start to prepare all of the paperwork required for the meeting. I headed back out to the container at the farm to fetch some more stuff. Upon returning, I set out to finish some tasks I had remaining from the previous day, mainly painting some shelves for a different suites cupboards. That took a while as I didn't properly wash out the brush, which had already been used a billion times before, and turned my white paint pink. After that I helped Hein with some painting of the stairs. I was really baking in the sun and had to put on some sunscreen. We had a lunch meat sandwich with the rest of the team for lunch, then got back to painting. Jos is trying to put in a little lawn in the courtyard, and sent Hein and I out to his friend's farm to pick up some chicken manure to fertilize the patch. The stuff didn't stink *too* bad, but I realized too late that I was wearing my flip flops. I was also unfortunate enough to pick the downwind shoveling spot. Add to this the fact that it was about 90 degrees, and it paints a very crappy picture (pardon the pun). Hopefully I won't die from inhaling ammonious chicken manure. On the way home, Hein stopped at the gas station and treated me to a soda, figuring we had earned it. It's the first time I have had a Sprite in a week, and it was quite tasty (I've been eyeing a 2 liter in the grocery, but haven't missed it quite enought yet). Upon returning, we shovelled the stuff into wheelbarrows and dispersed it. The rest of the afternoon was filled with odd jobs: stacking bricks, spraying sidewalks, carrying bags of donated clothes, moving furniture. After a quick shower and paint/skin removal session, we had a good dinner with the team, checked our email, and retired to our room. Still reading in Job; what a story of faith and frustration from someone God has allowed to be aflicted for His glory. We're loving the fan we bought, as much for its noise-making abilities as for its mass transfer ones; didn't even hear any trains or roosters at all!
