Day one of the CHI IBM
28OCT2004 :: 10:30pm :: Okahandja, Namibia :: Bedroom
Today was the first day the CHI international board meeting. We started at 8:30am with a few praise songs and then a prayer missionary from Germany did a teaching on fasting and prayer. He gave some interesting accounts of the power of prayer to transform nations. His main point today was that we need to 'pray the Scriptures' and recommended finding a promise of God that applies to any situation that we are in, then praying it specifically as it applies. We'll see how he follows up tomorrow. Next, everyone moved into the other room for the official meeting. The usual school desks where formed up into a square and each country had a plaque and a little flag. There were representatives from most of the Ministry nations (Namibia, Zambia, The DRC, Kenya - the nations where Christ's Hope is ministering) and all of the Mobilization nations (USA, UK, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium - the nations sending volunteers and resources). There were also several external international board members and others who were observing. Kate was tasked with backing up the secretary by taking meeting minutes, while i just sat in there and looked intelligent. To start the meeting, introductions were made, followed by the last meeting's minutes reviewed, this meeting's agenda agreed upon, and a ministry update from all of the CHI nations. Several side discussions ensued various issues, namely the breakdown of communications within the organization, and the need for a project proposal, evaluation, and funding process. We had lunch meat sandwiches for lunch, and an excellent coffee flavored cake during the break. The meeting lasted until a little after 6pm, and the power only went our several times today (like it did yesterday). For dinner we had a "chicken pot pie" dish over rice, and type of carrot/raisin salad with apples; it was all very tasty. After dinner we hung out and talked with Chuck and Carol Smith, who just arrived yesterday from Florida. They are planning on being here for several years, and Chuck is going to be CHI's chief operating officer. They are a cool couple and we'll enjoy getting to know them, I'm sure. I knew we would get along well when i saw him, during the meeting, start up the Google desktop search app on his laptop; he is an electrical engineer by trade. Following our after dinner conversation, we wrote a few emails, checked our emails and retired to our suite. We recently found our that our shower wasn't sealed too greatly and leaks down into Chuck and Carol's shower (they are below us and have the same layout). So maybe someday that will get fixed, as they say that it drips noisily after we've showered and has discolored their ceiling.
