Thursday's UM show rocked.

Set I.

Miss Tinkles Overture, Anchor Drops> 2x2 > Jimmy Stewart>Women, Wine, and Song, Divisions, Rosana

Set II:

Pantera Song*> Ringo>Stew/JO>Ringo, Utopian Fir > FF > Jimmy Stewart** > Last Man Swerving > Roulette, Power of Soul***

Encore: Kimble, Mail Package

*Possibly Cowboys, performed instrumentally as a tribute to Dimebag Darrel
**w/ Eleanor Rigby teases
**Band of Gypsies

I think this show was UM's first sell-out in New England. The paradise was bumping. The show touched on a lot of stylistic bases. They moved from arena rock, to melodic tunes, metal, southern rock, and techno without spending too much time focusing on one stile. It was a crisp and clean show and came off as very professional. The amazing thing is that I'm describing a show where the band spent too much time in its Stewarts and had to cut songs out of both planned sets.

The improv was unreal The 2x2 > and FF > stews each had 3-4 different sections that the band went into and out of effortlessly. The first set one had me convinced that I was hearing a new song, until I saw the first reset signals.

Despite Wednesday's hernia surgery, Bayliss delivered the best show I've seen from him in over a year. He, like Meyers, was on fire throughout the entire show. 2x2 and Divisions were stand out versions. Bayliss simultaneously channeled Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, or their bastard test-tube space babies, for all of the solos in Power of Soul.

I also have a hard time finding fault with an encore that begins with Kimble. The encore was the choppiest bit of the night. The classically influenced triumphant melodies of Kimble and the zappa-esque grit of Mail package were an unusual juxtaposition. I love both tunes, but it was a strange pair. Of course, the odd-meter wankery brought the house down.

Thanksgiving was delightful.  I really enjoyed the four days of relaxation, time spent with family and Kate.  While our weekly visits have been nice, the extended time seemed more significant and intense.  At least, in contrast to the drab and rather unsatisfying reality of gainful employment.  Highlights of the weekend included watching Kimble and Rocky interact.  Kimble just wanted to play, and rocky would have preferred to sleep but some little cat kept hopping behind him.

On Saturday, Kate and i climbed Mt. Cannon.  there was light snow, and some frustrating ice near the summit.  Crampons might have been helpful, especially on the descent.  We really were at the limit of conditions that I'm comfortable doing without equipment.  Spikes would also have been handy on the descent, in the valley, as plenty of snow had melted and was starting to harden into a very slick surface.
