![]() Il Dottore is actually a title meaning "the doctor" and not a name. However, like Il Capitano, this character embraces this supposed (and self-given) title more than his actual name and we often have him addressed by and address himself as simply "Dottore". His most common family name is Gratiano; other names include Boloardo, Balanzone, and Frobizone. New names could be created for him as well. Dottore is another vecchio, an old man. He is in numerous historical scenarios though sometimes his significance to the plot and stage time is minor while other times incredibly crucial. He is often a neighbor to Pantalone, sometimes a long-time friend, sometimes a bitter rival - often both in the same play. He has degrees (numerous) from the University of Bologna - or so he claims. He is an expert on law, then on medicine, then on anything else - or so he says. He will try to prove his supposed knowledge by talking at length to any and everyone on any subject, often going off into tangents and the nonsensical. Sometimes the stupider characters actually believe he is very intelligent; other times they know how "full of baloney" he is and chide him behind his back. The few actually smart Masks will see through him from the start. Dottore will sometimes know how clueless he really is but is hoping to impress the others, but usually he will actually think he is knowledge on the subject at hand and what he is something is beyond important and accurate. Dottore is often a father to one or more of the young lovers, usually the love of one of Pantalone's children. Like Pantalone, Dottore will sometimes hunt after women and if often depicted as an even more clueless letch - though he doesn't seem to think himself as young and virile as Pantalone believes himself to be. However, Dottore's carnal pleasures more reside with good food and greater wine. Dottore has proven to be a popular character in our modern set plays. He claims to be a professor at Case Western Reserve University, with numerous degrees (including loads of BS) from Wikipedia State University, South Euclid Campus. |
