GENERAL MEETING MINUTES, 4/12/05

[Posted by Aymy]

The agenda for the April 12th general Catalyst meeting was as follows:
A. Anti-gentrification community meeting, 4/21
B. USG funding appeals
C. Springfest, 4/23
D. RHA/USG greenie resolutions
E. Announcements: Lavender Ball!

Anti-gentrificiation community meeting, 4/21

This event is intended to take place at 7 PM on the 21st somewhere off campus that is easily accessible to community members. Jacqui has been talking to Janis Eatman-Williams trying to find prominent community members to come speak, and should know if there's anyone available by Thursday. Jacqui is also asking Janis for any suggestion concerning a venue.

Steve P contacted Dean Patterson concerning having administrators as speakers at this event. Mr. Patterson put him in contact with a Mr. Bursch (sp?) who is the Assistant Director of Community Development (i may have the title wrong, too). He wanted to know what time it was and for how long, and had a few other questions concerning the nature of the event. He has not signed on to speak for certain as of yet.

Once information about speakers and location are confirmed, Chris will be making the flier for this event (unless he's over-worked in which case Josh P will make it). We will be doing fliering around the community on Sunday morning/early afternoon. Jacqui is calling around to churches in advance, we will also be fliering at libraries, willing businesses, and so forth. If you are interested in helping (and you should be!), contact Tiffany at txk68@case.edu. Information about the event will also be posted on What's Up and Cleveland Indymedia.

If you have any professors who may be interested in this event, please pass on the information so that they may tell their classes about it - great publicity.

USG Funding Appeals

We had to appeal because we didn't get enough signatures to be re-named Category 3 next semester (which is a crock...)
As of 9 PM tonight, we were still a few short, so members were going to N. Side to acquire the last few signatures, because out appeal was scheduled for 11:20 PM this very Wednesday night (!) We will find out how this went later ...

Springfest, 4/23

Our table has been confirmed, we will be doing a corporate pig balloon-dart throw.
All we really need to do is buy things, make the board, and decide who will staff the table during the day, so we intend on doing this next week.

RHA and USG greenie resolutions

On Monday, Josh G met with RHA representatives and delivered a presentation concerning Catalyst's 7 points of labor in respect to the situation of the greenie drivers and parking attendants, and asked them to adopt a resolution supporting the initiative towards better wages and benefits for these workers. Although initially there was some concern over RHA not wanting to support Catalyst, it was explained that this is not the case, and RHA members were generally neutral to favorable of the idea. We will know by next Monday for certain whether a resolution will be passed.

There is one USG meeting left in this school year, next Tuesday at 7 PM. These meetings are more formal, and require our initiative being scheduled onto the agenda, and a willing member of USG to sponsor it. Josh G will also be contacting the president of USG, inquiring about our prospects of being able to be on the agenda for the last meeting. Also, he'll ask him if he himself will sponsor our initiative, and it not, if he could direct us to a USG member that would. We'll be presenting them wil the 7 points, a tweaked version of the greenie resolution, and the 10-pg brief concerning the situation with standard parking at case.

announcements: LAVENDER BALL!

This Friday, Horvorka Atrium, 8-12. Dress up, look fancy! DJ Branden, food and drink, President Hundert with children in tow. All in all, sounds like a worthwhile affair.

The LAST general meeting of the semester will take place on Wednesday, 4/20, a 9 PM in the Thwing Spartan Room.
(And remember, we still have consensus, too!)

General Meeting Minutes, March 16th, 2005

[Posted by Aymy]

Well, well, look who had time to post the minutes from the March 16th general meeting!

The Agenda for the meeting was as follows:

   A.  Report Back:  Meeting with Dick Jamieson

   B.  Report Back:  Jobs With Justice Annual Meeting

   C.  Friday, March 18th: Demonstration, 1 PM, KSL Oval

   D.  Sunday, March 20th:  Iraqi War Rememberance, 8 PM, KSL Oval

   E.  Student Labor Action Week, April 1-4

   F.   Springfest

   G.   Student Activities Fair

   H.   Announcement:  CWRU ACLU Panel Discussion on Students Bill of Rights

Thursday, March 17th, 11:30-1, Guilford Parlor

   J.  Announcement:  Meeting Concerning reform of University's Sexual Misconduct Policy

Thursday, March 17th, 11:30-1, Cleveland Room (Thwing West)

   K.  "Sex Signals":  Skits concerning sexual assault, gender roles on campus, March 29th

Report Back:  Meeting with Dick Jamieson

Several Catalyst members met with our administration's employee liasion, Dick Jamieson, over the spring break to further discuss the situation of greenie drivers and parking lot attendants on Case campus.  In one word, the meeting was said to be "worthless."  Additionally, I've been asked to note that he sat in a particularly obscene manner throughout the meeting, with legs spread, groin protrubing, and I heard there was some rubbing involved?  Anyways, following is a short summary of what was discussed in the meeting.

Dick Jamieson stated that the school had always outsourced some of its services, basically from its creation, and that it is a stable, enduring, successful part of the university's tradition.  Nonetheless, he said that one of the reasons the university chooses to outsource is to help decrease the inflating tuition costs on students.

When asked about Hossein Sadid's comments that the University was actually making money off this endeavor, Jamieson replied that the university has never been able to make money off of these services - but that one way to do so is to reduce the costs (i.e. wages and benefits received by workers).

He argued that the grievance process for fired Bon Appetit employees was adequate.  He also stated that the wages and benefits received by greenie and parking employees are competitive with the Cleveland market.  However, it seems he was unable to provide sufficient evidence for either of these statements.

He emphasized that wages and benefits have not changed considerably.  He said that 'it's a fact' that several got pay raises.  He did admit that benefits have changed, but he declined to comment on how, insisting that it is not an issue since many of the workers are part-time (which is not the case).  Also, he said that everyone was offered their job back, and all those that were re-hired were done so at the market rate.

He said our ideas concerning a Labor Board are great, but that he isn't the one to speak to (he isn't?).  However, he declined to give the name of who we would have to talk to about such a proposition.  Instead, he suggested that we have our organization's adviser, Peter McCall, try to pass something through Faculty Senate as a first step.

He felt that our use of the term 'outsourcing' in the  7 points and resolution in support of greenie drivers connote that outsourcing is a new phenomenon at this university, and would like us to look into more deeply the larger history of outsourcing at CWRU.

We have decided to push off more talks with the administration until after Student Labor Action Week, at which point we will try to arrange an appointment with President Hundert.

Report Back:  Jobs With Justice Annual Meeting

Basically, everyone at JWJ was really excited to see that Case students are working on labor issues, and are willing to support us in whatever initiatives we undertake on these and other issues.  Additionally, we talked to several representatives of unions and the AFL-CIO, as well as labor organizations on other campuses, that are quite interested in collaborating with us on these issues.

There are also several other initiatives going on, let me give a real quick run down

Call OH senators and tell them to vote No to CAFTA

April 12th support affordable health care in OH:  Demonstration in front of state house, Columbus

Help keep Wal-mart from coming to Cleveland

   Protect social security

Support Cleveland cinema union workers.  There will be a demonstration concerning this on Sunday, March 20th, in Public Square downtown.

Friday, March 18th: Demonstration, 1 PM, KSL Oval

On Friday, we will be meeting at KSL Oval at 1 PM and having a rally, before marching to Adelbert Hall and continuing there as we present the administration with the petition in support of greenie drivers and parking attendants.  Jacqui, the Steves, Angela, and possibly Tiffany will be speaking, and Tiffany will be acquiring the megaphone.

We need banners and signs for this occassion, and since there is a St. Patrick's Day party commencing at Angela and Aymy's apartment Thursday evening, we figure it best to just do it there.  Angela will be home after 3 PM, so show up early and help out.

Josh G. sent out quarter sheets to the discuss list for last minute advertising, so please print these and distribute as widely as possible in the next 24 hours!

Whether or not the entire march will enter Adelbert is contingent on the size of the march and whether the administration has set any major impediments (i.e. security) that would impinge upon the safety of those marching.  On a contingency plan, the MC (Aymy) will keep the crowd in front of Adelbert going as 4 or 5 Catalyst representatives deliver the petition to President Hundert's office.

This is going to be fun!

Sunday, March 20th:  Iraqi War Rememberance, 8 PM, KSL Oval

On Sunday evening, we will be meeting on the KSL Oval for a candlelight vigil in remembrance of all those Iraqi civilians and American soldiers who have lost their lives in the 2nd Iraq War.  Lex sent out fliers for this event several weeks ago, so please check your e-mail and advertise for this event.

We have $60 allocated for this event, and Josh P. will be purchasing candles and dixie cups (to protect the flame).  Leftover candles and cups can be used for the Take Back the Night vigil, since USG decided to allocate no money for that event.

Jacqui will be getting in contact with Case For peace and What's Up Northeast Ohio.  Also, anyone planning on attending any anti-war events over this weekend should inform anyone interested about this event.

Student Labor Action Week, April 1-4

We will be having 3 events this week, I have them all laid out seperately below:

Labor Movie Day:  Friday, April 1, 9-5, Thwing Atrium

We've been collecting movies, including "At the River I Stand" and "A Bug's Life," sponsored by Jobs With Justice.  We're looking for more films, so if you know of any titles which have to do with labor struggle, contact Josh P (jjp17@cwru.edu), and he'll order it through the university.

State-wide Student Labor Action Week Rally:  Saturday, April 2, 1 PM, KSL Oval

On April 2nd, CWRU will be the site of a state-wide student labor rally.  We will be inviting labor organizations (not just students) from throughout Ohio to attend, so start coming up with a list of groups for next week's meeting.  In addition to deciding upon how we will be inviting people, we need to brainstorm on what we will do at this rally.  This will all be discussed extensively at next week's meeting.

Labor Relations at Case Panel Discussion:  Monday, April 4th, 4 PM, 1914 Lounge

We have 5 speakers confirmed for this discussion, which will focus on ways in which we can make Labor relations at CWRU more just.  I wasn't able to jot down names quickly enough, but speakers include representatives from USAS, SEIU, Hard-hatted Women, Unite, and Jobs With Justice.  Unfortunately, we have been unable to find any CWRU faculty willing to speak on this topic, so if you know of anyone who we have yet to contact, please let Josh P know.

Springfest

We usually participate in Springfest, and the forms are due this Friday, so we quickly cam up with a game premise for our booth.  "Pin the Tail on the Corporate Pig"  Should be fun.  I don't know the date of Springfest off-hand, I know it's at the end of April.  Josh G will be taking care of forms and e-mail contacts for this event.

Student Activities Fair

I don't know the date of this either, haha, it's around the same time as Springfest.  We decided to do this too.

Announcement:  CWRU ACLU Panel Discussion on Students Bill of Rights

On Thursday, March 17th, from 11:30-1, Case ACLU will be hosting a panel discussion in Guilford Parlor concerning the recently introduced Ohio "Student Bill of Rights."  Speakers include Professors Singham, White, Sadowsky, and Durschlag, and should prove to be quite an interesting discussion, so try to attend.

Announcement:  Meeting Concerning reform of University's Sexual Misconduct Policy

Also on Thursday, March 17th, from 11:30-1, there will be a discussion involving reforming the University's current Sexual Misconduct Policy, which as of present is rather ineffective.  This discussion will take place in the Cleveland Room in Thwing West, so if you want to help contribute, please go and share your ideas.

Announcement:  "Sex Signals"  Skits concerning sexual assault, gender roles on campus, March 29th

"Sex Signals" is a series of somewhat light-hearted skits regarding issues of gender roles and stereotyping, sexual assault, and a variety of other gender issues in the university context.  I'm sorry I don't have more information, if you are interested contact Winnie (wsl4@cwru.edu).

The next general Catalyst meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 23rd at 9 PM in the Thwing Spartan Room.

General Meeting Minutes, Feb. 9th, 2005

The agenda for the Feb. 9th meeting for Catalyst was as follows:

   A.  Update on Greenie outsourcing

   B.  Update on Jobs With Justice meeting, Feb. 16th.

   C.  Social Justice Week, Feb. 21 - 25th

   D.  Showcase for Social Justice, Feb. 11th

   E.  Prospects for Peace, Axis of Evil, Feb. 23rd.

   F.  Condom Week, Feb. 14 - 18th

   G.  Update on WRC

   H.  Drag Contest Feb. 25th

   J.  Announcements:  National Student Labor Action Week; Demonstration Feb. 11th to support local activist; Vagina Monologues

Update on Greenie Outsourcing

Fliers, tri-folds, and the petitions have been made, as well as a website.  Talk it up.

Mr. Sadid, the school's Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, has agreed to meet with Catalyst once again tomorrow, Feb. 10th, at noon.  We will be discussing the discrepancies we've found in the statements of the CASE administration since we began delving into these concerns.  To check out what was discussed with Catalyst's last meeting with Sadid, click here.  Jacqui, Steve P., and Tiffany are all planning on attending this meeting, and will be posting what was discovered in the near future.

We are tabling to pass out information on this topic and to try to gain signatures on our petitions.  We will be fliering on Feb. 10th, from 11 AM to 1 PM in Thwing Atrium and Nord Lounge.  Additionally, we will be fliering at the dining halls on Friday, Feb. 11th from 5 - 8 PM.  Aymy and Angela have promised to take on Nord and Leutner, and Josh has promised Thwing and Fribley (with Tiffany helping on the latter), but please stop down and visit people, take the load off of these few for a little while.

We plan to present the administration our petition on Feb. 18th.  Lots of planning needs to be done for this (i.e. - What do we do once we walk into Adelbert?)  We should discuss this next week.

Update on Jobs With Justice Meeting, Feb. 16th

I'm not a broken record.  If you are interested in what this meeting is about and how Catalyst hopes to be involved, please click here and scroll down.

We're not sure, because Angela has been having problems reaching our contact, when exactly the meeting time is, although we know it's in the early evening.  Angela will know for sure within the next 24 hours and post the information.

Angela, Aymy, Steve P., Josh P., and Chris W. all intend on going, and will be meeting in the near future to discuss exact logistics.

Social Justice Week, Feb. 21 - 25th

Josh G. is still contacting groups, and will be sending out a final e-mail by the end of the week requesting participation in this week of activities.  So far, Spectrum, FMLA, and the Center for Women are all on board to take part in Social Justice Week.

Fliers with a timetable of Social Justice Week events will be made and distributed upon final confirmation of events scheduled by other organizations.

Showcase for Social Justice, Feb.11th

Chris U. made some fabulous fliers for this event (to view them, go here).    Center for Women, Spectrum, and FMLA will be tabling for this event, and individuals are personally contacting Sierra Club and ACLU to request information to set out about their organizations as well.  We realize that it's now short notice for groups to participate (although we did send out invitations to organizations a month ago), but it's very non-labor intensive.  They just need information and an optional one person.

There has been a serious lack of fliering for this event, so compensate in the next 36 hours!

Prospects for Peace:  Axis of Evil, Feb. 23rd

Thus far, we have confirmed Prof. Princehouse of the philosophy department as our moderator for the evening, and Prof. Sarma of the religion department has agreed to speak on the topic.  Neither prof. Williams or Prof. Lee will be able to attend.  Jacqui is going to try to personally corner Prof. McHale, of political science, and request his presence.  She will also be contacting Prof. McMann, also of political science, on the issue.  Additionally, Aymy will be contacting Prof. Sadowsky of the history department.

Jacqui is making the flier for this event over the weekend, so we can begin advertising early.

Winnie has put in the reservation form, but has still yet to receive a response.

Condom Week, Feb. 14 -18th

Catalyst has agreed to tabling at Leutner Dining Hall from 5:30 - 7:30 PM, on behalf of our co-sponsoring National Condom Week here at CWRU.  Jacqui, Angela, and Aymy have all agreed to table, and will be receiving materials from the Center for Women shortly.

Friday, Feb. 11th, from 11 AM - 1 PM, there will be a Condom Week preparation meeting at the Center for Women.  We will be cutting out paper hearts, writing funny slogans on them, and attaching to them condoms.  There will be food.  Please come help out!

Tiffany is designing table games for this week.  If you are creative and care to help her, please meet on Saturday, Feb. 12th, at 3 PM in Thwing Atrium.

WRC Update

Lex finished the design for the postcard drive, and Angela will be putting on the text and posting it to the megaphone in the near future.  Now we need to get these printed.  We already have found a location and received a quote, so now it's just a matter of re-allocating funds.  Tiffany and Winnie said this would be no problem, and that they'd take care of it.

Drag Contest, Feb. 25th

Everything's looking awesome.

Announcement:  National Student Labor Action Week

Two graduate students, Josh P. and Chris W., discussed with us the prospects of participating in this year's week of National student labor action.  As Catalyst has traditionally participated in this week of events, we decided we'd be more than happy to help.  We are planning an all-day movie festival concerning labor issues for March 31st, followed by a panel discussion on labor issues at CWRU on April 4th.  Several speakers have already been found for the latter event.  We will be reserving rooms and finalizing speakers in the near future.  Look forward to this!

Announcement:  Demonstration Feb. 11th to Support Local Activist

Case alumnus and former Catalyst member Joey Steel was arrested in Public Square last week for 'agitation' and fliering.  After conflict with police, Joey was officially arrested for aggravated disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor which carries up to 6 months in jail.  This Friday, individuals and organizations will be gathering in Public Square from 3 - 5 PM, in order to create a general atmosphere of resistance to the attacks on local activists such as Joey at the hands of local Cleveland authorities.  Everyone is encouraged to attend and get loud!  Also, legal assistance will be necessary, so donations are greatly appreciated.

Announcement:  Vagina Monologues

The Vagina Monologues will take place on Friday, Feb. 11th and Saturday, Feb. 12th at 8 PM, as well as Sunday, Feb. 13th at 3 PM.

All shows will take place at the Amasa Stone Chapel (next to the Baker Hole on Euclid Ave.)

The show is $5 for students, and $10 for everyone else.

Jacqui says you better come every single night!

General Meeting Minutes, Feb. 2nd, 2005

(Posted by Aymy)

There was one helluva Agenda for the Feb. 2nd meeting:

   A.  Update on University Sub-Contracting of Transportation Services

   B.  Jobs With Justice Meeting, Feb. 16th

   C.  Update on Labor Conditions in Dining Halls

   D.  Social Justice Week

   E.  Social Justice Fair w/ Food, Feb. 11th

   F.  Prospects for Peace 'Axis of Evil,' Feb. 23rd.

   G.  Update on WRC campaign

   H.  Condom Week, Feb. 14th - 18th

   J.  Drag Contest, Feb. 25th

   K.  Announcements:  Nawal Saadawi; new CASE LGBT website; website how-to workshop

There's so much there it's mind-boggling.  Y'all should be happy I'm such a nice secretary.  ^_^

Update on University Sub-Contracting of Transportation Services

At a Labor planning meeting on Feb. 1st, we decided to try to raise popular awareness and support of this issue, in able to more effectively mobilize the University community.

I really most certainly am not going to type up what all went on at that meeting, because I already put up minutes for it.  So if you want to know the nitty-gritty of what's going on (and you should), then click this link.

Fine, super quick run-down.  The administration isn't telling the story straight, but we're going in one more time to explain these contradictions to them anyways (more on that later).  We also plan on mobilizing - getting 1000 signatures in support of the employees.  We will then invite members of the CASE, University Circle, and Cleveland communities, as well as the Cleveland media, to come with us on Feb. 18th in re-presenting the resolution and 7 points.

Tiffany will have the petition(s) and Angela will have posted the flyer(s) about the sub-contracting, the petition, and the event in the very near future.

We are planning on tabling in Thwing and the Dining Halls (as well as door-to-door in the dormitories a few days later, solicitation policies provided).  Aymy will be contacting Terri Geiger to reserve the table in Thwing.  The list of these dates and who is tabling is below:

Thursday, February 10th, 11:30 - 1:00

Thwing Atrium:  Steve G., Sabina (probably), Chris, Josh, and Tiffany (maybe).

Nord Lounge:    Aymy, Angela, Lauren, Sabina (maybe), Tiffany (maybe).

Friday, February 11th, 5:00 - 8:00

Leutner Commons:  Aymy, Erin, Steve P., Winnie (Fribley if needed), Sabina, Josh, Lex, Tiffany (call if needed)

Fribley Commons:  Tiffany (call if needed).

Looks like we're need more people on the 11th down at Fribley.

Josh and Jessie will be doing press releases for the event.  If you have potential press sources, e-mail them (josh.gohlike@case.edu).  They will be posting the press release on the megaphone as well.

Another Meeting With Mr. Hosein Sadid

For diplomatic reason, we've decided that'd be best to arrange a meeting with the administration prior to Feb. 18th, in order to present them with the contradictions we've collected concerning the recent changes in working conditions for greenie drivers and parking attendants.

We considered meeting with the employee liaison, Dick Jameson, as Mr. Sadid had previously suggested.  However, given the precedents Sadid has left us with in our last conversation, it would be much more effective to work from this existing base than start anew with another official.  Jacqui will (hopefully) be sending out this e-mail very soon.

And Of Course. . .

Continue talking to employees!  We need to do all of this in collaboration with employees.  Let them know that we know what's up, in addition to asking questions.  Let them know about Feb. 18th, and that the community knows what's going on.  We've dedicated a whole section of the new Greenie site on the Catalyst page to these conversations, so do it up!

Jobs With Justice meeting, February 16th

Again, most of this was hashed out in the nitty-gritty at the Feb. 1st Labor meeting.  To see the notes concerning Jobs With Justice, then click here and scroll down.  Quick run-down?  We're planning on having a demonstration concerning the outsourcing on Friday, March 18th,at 1:00 PM, and we're hoping Jobs With Justice will help us mobilize the event.  We will also be asking them to help us mobilize for other events over the course of the next year (we will be giving them approximate dates), as well as asking for help and advice on grass-roots organizing on this issue in the surrounding community.

This meeting is the evening of February 16th.  If you want to go, e-mail Angela (ajg16@case.edu).

Update on Labor Conditions in Dining Halls

Although at the beginning of the school year, labor conditions were looking relatively satisfactory within the dining halls, we've been wondering whether this was just the sparkle and gleam of a new service provider, and whether they've let things slip as time has worn by.

The only real way to find these things out is to go into the cafeterias and ask!!  Talk to the employees, find out about wages, benefits, hours, training programs, etc, etc.  You should be friends with these employees anyways - they are your surrogate parents here at college.

Social Justice Week, Feb. 21st - 25th

Schedule of Events Thus Far:

   Monday, Feb. 21st - FMLA:  Pot-Luck Mixer

Wednesday, Feb. 23rd - Catalyst:  Prospects for Peace 'Axis of Evil'

Friday, Feb. 15th - Spectrum and Catalyst:  Drag Contest

As you can see, we need events for Tuesday and Thursday.  The CASE ACLU is thinking about having an event Feb. 22nd in collaboration with Social justice Week, and Steve P. will be finding this out for definite soon.

We need to contact groups, and ask them to participate in Social Justice Week by having events.  Josh will be sending out this e-mail soon, so if you have groups you'd like this sent to, e-mail him their contact information (josh.gohlike@case.edu).

Social Justice Fair with Food, Feb. 11th

This event will be taking place on Friday, February 11th, from 12:30 - 1:45 in Guilford Parlor.  This conflicts with several other events on campus (see Condom Week and announcements below), but not that many Catalyst members need to be there, so it should be fine.

Tiffany, Aymy, Angela, Lauren, Sabina, and Jessie are all intending on attending this event.  We will need to be there early (approximately noon) to set-up.  Tiffany will be bringing the purchased food, and Angela will be ordering vegetarian Captain Tony's in advance.

Josh's e-mail about Social Justice Week to campus organizations (see above) will also address participation in this event.

Chris will be making flyers, and posting them up on the megaphone in the near future.

Prospects for Peace, Feb. 23rd

We have to stick with the date of the 23rd, to avoid confusion with other groups in scheduling for Social Justice Week.  Given this, Patricia Princehouse has already agreed to moderate.  However, Emery Lee will be unable to speak. Tiffany will be contacting Professors Rhonda Williams and Deepak Sarma as other potential speakers.

However, we are trying to keep this panel discussion balanced, which means we need to find a conservative voice ASAP!

Please, if you know anyone at all, contact them!

We still have no room for this event, and we will discuss advertising at a later date.

Update on WRC Campaign

Angela and Aymy have yet to find a potential speaker to come to campus this spring to speak on behalf of the WRC, but they are working on it.  Angela will be contacting the Midwest USAS coordinator in the next couple of days for some leads.

We still intend on doing the WRC post-card drive, and Lex has nearly completed the design.  We have the quote for getting them printed, but seeing how USG gave us no money for these, we will either have to re-allocate or petition USG for use of their left-over funds from last semester.  Either way, it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

Condom Week, Feb. 14th - 18th

There will be a preparation meeting for this event on Friday, February 11th, from 11:00 - 1:00 at the Center for Women (on the third floor of Thwing).  During the course of condom week, we will be distributing condoms, literature on safe sex practices, etc.  We will be tabling in Dining Halls that Monday, Feb. 14th (Catalyst has already called dibs on Leutner - sign-up sheet next meeting), as well as Thursday, Feb. 17th, in Thwing during Provost Hour.  Tiffany is making safe sex table games, so if you are creative and want to help her out, e-mail her (txk68@case.edu).

There will also be a movie showing some time this week

For more information about the details of Condom Week, e-mail Winnie (wsl4@case.edu).

Drag Contest, Feb. 25th

This is mad complex.  If you want details, contact Winnie (wsl4@case.edu), subscribe to the Spectrum mailing list, or go to the next Spectrum meeting (Monday, Feb. 7th, 7 PM, Thwing Spartan Room).

We went what kind of competition this will be in last week's minutes. This week's is concerned with staffing.

There will be a host and a panel of 3 judges, as well as 3 bartenders and 1 technical (sound and light) person.

We are looking for people to take coats before it begins, so if you're interested, e-mail Winnie.

Note that if you're planning on entering as a contestant, you are prohibited from claiming Spectrum as your sponsoring organization.  Because Spectrum intends to donate half the funds collected and allow the organization with the most contestants to donate the other half, it would be unfair for Spectrum to compete in such a contest.  Spectrum meetings can still compete, but only as individuals or as members of another organization.  Catalyst contestants can claim the organization, as we do not automatically receive money.

Some of the purchasing would be good to do whole-sale, so if anyone has a Cosco membership (Jessie's Mother, perhaps??), then contact Tiffany (txk68@case.edu) or Winnie.

Other needed contributions:

   Blenders

Almost Done . . .

Announcement:  Nawal Saadawi

On Friday, February 11th, at 12:30, Nawal Saadawi will be speaking on women's health issues.  Saadawi is Egyptian, Muslim, and a Feminist, and has not only worked for the UN, but is currently running for President in Egypt to serve a point concerning women's issues in the area.  From what I've heard, Nawal Saadawi is an amazing human being, and you should definitely consider checking this out.  Unfortunately, I don't have the place, but check flyers around campus or e-mail Erin (eee3@case.edu).

Announcement:  New CASE LGBT site

This should've come in everyone's e-mail, but in case you missed it, here is the link.  We are astounded by this leap of acknowledgement that the university has given is LGBT community, and we highly encourage you to check out this new age to the fullest!

In addition, if you are happy with this recognition, please contact Lynn Singer, the Deputy Provost and Vice President of Academic Programs, and thank her!!

Announcement:  Website How-To Workshop

Because several members have expressed interest in learning how to alter the Catalyst webpage, Steve G. is offering to do a workshop on the matter.  He will be posting something up about this shortly, so please comment back to this with available times when we could have this workshop.

And that's it!!!

The next general Catalyst meeting will take place on Feb. 9th at 9:00 PM in the Thwing Spartan Room.

General Meeting Minutes, Jan. 26th, 2005

(Posted by Aymy)

Agenda for the Jan. 26th meeting:

  A.  Food and information event (Jan. 27th) - Postponed

  B.  Outsourcing of Greenie and parking attendant services

  C.  Jobs With Justice meeting, Feb. 16th.

  D.  Social Justice Week - Prospects for Peace, Feb. 23rd.

  E.  Drag Contest, Feb. 25th

  F.  Timeline of upcoming events

  G.  Other Issues:  WRC Speaker; megaphone

  H.  Announcements:  Sexual Assault flyer mtg.; Condom Week planning; Hallinan Project.

Food and information event (Jan. 27th) – Postponed

Due to unfortunate circumstances, we've had to postpone the food event and re-schedule it in the near future.  We were unable to find an appropriate room (we could have used the basement of Crawford, but no one would've came).  Since Social Justice Week is the last full week of February, we assume that postponing this event until a week or two before then would give us a good opportunity to advertise for SJ week.

Therefore, Winnie has contacted Terri Geiger, who is trying very hard to find us an appropriate setting for this event (right now, its looking like maybe Guilford Parlor).  We have told her that we would like to re-schedule this event for Feb. 10th or Feb. 17th, depending on availability.  After this date is known, Josh will be re-contacting various campus organizations, due to the lack of previous responses.  He'll be posting a draft of this e-mail up on the megaphone for comments.

Due to the re-schedulings of this event, the funds we have for this event have been diminished somewhat, care of USG.  We have $200 for this event (as opposed to the original $250), so we still have ample funds available to finance this event.  However, because almost $160 in food has already been purchased for this event (ala super Target), we will not be ordering from Mi Pueblo as we had originally intended.  Angela will still call and order pizza from Captain Tony's for the event.

Outsourcing of Greenie and parking attendant services

Jacqui was contacted Wednesday morning and told that we had a meeting the following afternoon (Jan. 27th) with the university's Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, Hossein Sadid.  Angela, Aymy, Steve (younger), and Tiffany will be attending this meeting.  The goal of this meeting is not to change the decision to outsource to Standard Parking, but together as much information from the university's position as possible.  The Catalyst representatives attending this meeting will discuss the resolutions we crafted at the end of last semester, and we have decided not to alter our demands being made on the university, as we feel they are still realistic, despite the decision having already taken effect (to see the resolution in question, simply scroll down on the Megaphone main page).  The results of this meeting will be posted to the megaphone.

Students on the CASE FaceBook have erected a group site entitled "Save Dean," dedicated to preserving the job of at least one greenie driver.  There are 78 members of this group, and Angela and others are intending on alerting these students to Catalyst's initiatives, in order to foster support for the issue among the student body.  To view the "Save Dean" site, click here.

Josh has submitted a letter to the editor to the Observer, and hopefully it will be ran soon.  As of yet, there have been no conversations with greenie drivers, but Sabina is intending to do so tonight and tomorrow morning.

Jobs With Justice meeting, Feb. 16th

Cleveland Jobs With Justice will be having its annual planning meeting on Feb. 16th to decide how they’re going to devote their energy over the next year.  After contacting them about the decision to outsource to Standard Parking, JWJ has invited us to attend this meeting, in order to figure out ways that JWJ can aid us in organizing around this event.

Consequently, Catalyst needs to prepare for this meeting.  We intend on coming to the meeting with information on what we have done so far, what we intend to do, and how Jobs With Justice fits into this picture.  These are some very big questions, so we will be having a planning meeting to address these issues on Monday, Feb. 1st, at Angela and Aymy’s apartment (if you need directions, e-mail alb18@cwru.edu).

Social Justice Week – Prospects for Peace, February 23rd

So far, we have attempted to contact several speakers:  Professors McHale, Emery Lee, Williams, and Princehouse.  We have yet to hear back from McHale or Lee, Tiffany was waiting to contact Williams, and Princehouse said she’d be willing to moderate the event if we could mover the event up one day, to Wednesday, Feb. 23rd.  As this doesn’t seem to be a big conflict, and we have ample time to change the date, we will accommodate this scheduling conflict.

Patricia also gave us the names of some other professors that we might contact.  However, these professors would tend to lead towards the side we assume will be already over-represented.  Therefore, if any of you know of any right or moderate professors, please e-mail them and ask them if they’re interested in speaking at this event.  If you need help writing this e-mail, contact Aymy or Jacqui (alb18 or jcg24).  Law School professors are a good idea.  Angela will try to find someone in economics.

Drag Contest, Feb. 25th

Catalyst will be co-sponsoring this event with Spectrum, and we have been allocated $200 to help out with this event.  We were originally intending to use this money in order to hire a DJ for the evening, but we’ve decided to go a bit more low-tech and use this money for prizes instead.

The plan for the evening is to have 4 categories for which contestants may win:  the Drag King and Queen of Lip-Syncing, and the Drag King and Queen of Modeling.  Finalists will be selected by a panel of judges, and the winner will be decided by the audience, via voting through dollars.  The contestant who earns the most money is the winner.  The first prize winner will receive a new iPod.

In addition, the funds collected through this event will be divided in half between Spectrum and whichever other organization enters the most number of contestants.  Both halves will be donated to the group’s charity of choice.

This contest is open to any one affiliated with CASE (students, faculty, staff)

Attendance and help with set-up is especially needed from the members of Catalyst.  We will also be needed for labor, such as collecting money and (dry) bartending.  Angela and Aymy want to bartend.  Of course, those who are entering can’t help out, so figure it out soon!

The event will take place starting at 7:00 PM in the Thwing Ballroom, and we have this room reserved for the entire evening.  Please circulate information about this event widely, as contestants are needed!!  Flyers will be made available soon, care of Spectrum.

 Timeline of Upcoming Events

This is merely to avoid any future confusion as to when future Catalyst events are occurring.

Feb. 10th or 17th – Food and information event

Feb. 23rd  -            Prospects for Peace: Axis of Evil

Feb. 25th  -            Drag Contest

Mar. 20th  -            Iraq War Anniversary Candlelight Vigil

Apr. 5th  -               Panel Discussion

Apr. 21st  -             Anti-Oppression Panel Discussion

In addition, Catalyst is supposed to be bringing a speaker to discuss the WRC to campus.  This will be addressed in the next section.  We had also scheduled an anti-gentrification event and a WRC postcard drive, but as we received no funds for these events, they are not bound by dates.

Other Issues

WRC Speaker

Catalyst had planned on arranging a speaker to come to campus to discuss the Workers Rights Consortium on March 3rd.  However, considering how close in proximity this date is to Social Justice Week, we have decided to move the date.  This new date will be decided once Angela and Aymy begin to find potential people to bring to campus.

Megaphone

(Angela’s making me put this in here).  Aymy suggested that more people besides herself begin regularly posting to the megaphone, so that Catalyst members can keep posted on what each other are working on throughout the week.  Please don’t make Aymy sad, because Angela has to deal with it.

Announcements

Sexual Assault Flyer Meeting

The Center for Women will be drafting a new informational flyer about sexual assault to post in dormitory bathrooms.  They’re requesting fresh ideas, so if you have any, please show up!  Food will be available.  This meeting will take place at the Center for Women (3rd floor of Thwing) at 12:30 on Friday, Jan. 28th.  If you plan on attending, please contact Winnie at wsl4.

Condom Week planning meeting

Condom Week occurs every year on CWRU campus the week of Valentine’s Day in order to promote safe sex.  This year, the Center for Women is trying to get as many student organizations as possible to participate.  There will be a planning meeting to brainstorm distribution methods and such at the Center for Women at 6:00 PM on Monday, Jan. 31st.  It is important that (especially non-FMLA/non-Spectrum) Catalyst members attend this meeting, as we are intending to be involved in these activities, and we need to let the Center for Women know how.

Hallinan Project

CWRU will be hosting a 2-day series of workshops dedicated to peace and justice work.  These workshops will be led by founders and activists of Jonah House, a renowned community dedicated to faith, non-violence, and resistance.  For more information, please contact Winnie at wsl4.

The next General meeting will take place on Feb. 2nd at 9:00 PM in Thwing Spartan Room.

General Meeting, Monday, January 18, 2005

(Posted by Aymy)

Agenda for the January 17th general Catalyst meeting:

A. Sub-contracting of Greenie and Parking attendant services
B. January 20th Presidential inauguration in Washington D.C.
C. Food and information distribution event January 27th
D. Upcoming Events: Drag Contest Feb. 25th
E. Upcoming events: Prospects for Peace - "Axis of Evil", Feb. 24th
F. Announcements: Demo. 1/18 concerning construction of Collinwood HS by non-community members

Sub-contracting of Greenies and Parking Attendant services

Updates:
Jacqui called Mr. Sadid's office on Friday (Jan. 14th) afternoon, but has still not received any response. If no response is received by Tuesday during lunch, Jacqui will be calling again.

As you can see, no one has commented yet concerning conversations with Greenie drivers regarding this issue. This is very important!! This initiative will never be able to go anywhere without constant dialog and the backing of the workers.

Josh will be admitting an editorial letter to the Observer in time for this Friday's deadline (Jan. 21st). I'm not sure when this means the letter will come out (if it makes it). Most likely next week or the one following.

The annual agenda meeting of Jobs With Justice is February 16th. As a group, we need to decide how we want JWJ to help us in this campaign. If you want to attend this JWJ meeting, or if you want to know more about the organization, contact Angela (ajg16).

Aymy, Angela, and Tiffany will be doing research during the next couple days concerning Standard Parking Company, it's policies, and past incidences of unfair labor practices.

We want to do something concrete, but first (and most importantly!!!) we need to get out there and talk to those people who have been directly affected from this change!

January 20th Presidential Inauguration in Washington D.C.

As planned, members of Catalyst fliered both the North and South residential villages last Friday afternoon (Jan. 14th). These fliers direct those interested to visit our website, which then supplies them with a direct link to NOAC's e-mail. At this point, we are unaware of how many CASE people have actually signed up to ride the NOAC buses.

Due to weather conditions and lack of fliers (places where we could print were closed or broken), fliering did not occur on Monday night. However, Winnie will be sending the flier out to the list very shortly, and it is encouraged that people try to post them up around campus Tuesday and Wednesday.

Food and information distribution event, January 27th

Although this event was originally scheduled to occur on January 20th, we don't think this reallocation will mess anything up too bad.

We have been allocated $250 for this event, all of this comprising of food and beverages. We plan to order trays from Mi Pueblo, as well as pizza from Captain Tony's. Jacqui will be trays ordering from Mi Pueblo, and Angela and Aymy will take care of pizza. Besides the tray, we are planning on ordering vegan, cheese, and pepperoni pizzas, so if you want anything special, e-mail Angela (ajg16). In addition, Aymy, Lauren, and possibly Tiffany will be purchasing drinks and other non-food items for the event. We are planning on spending $130 on all non-food items, with $40 going towards pizza and another $80 for Mi Pueblo.

We need someone (with a car)to pick up the food from Mi Pueblo at 1:45 AM on the day of the event!!!

Winnie has the list of contact information for other campus groups and her and Josh will be e-mailing people in the very near future.

Winnie has put in the room reservation form, but as of present we have heard no response back yet. Tentatively, this event will occur in the 1914 Lounge or the Spartan Room of the Thwing building during Provost Hour (11:15 - 1:15).

Jacqui is planning on making the flier for this event, which will be completed by this weekend. We are planning to do group fliering next Monday night (Jan. 24th). In addition, Angela will be making quarter sheet fliers that we can hand out on the KSL Oval the Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons before the event.

As this event is, in part, information distribution, we need our own information to distribute. We already have information concerning the WRC campaign. Aymy will be making something concerning the sub-contracting of the greenie drivers, Winnie will bring information concerning Issue 1, and Erin will find a flier or zine concerning local anti-gentrification efforts and our initiatives concerning the matter. In addition, jacqui will be making a quarter sheet for the event giving our website address, and instructions on how to post to the megaphone and how to subscribe to our mailing list.

Also, Angela and Aymy will be rummaging through their closets for an appropriate Catalyst banner.

Aymy and Angela will be at the event early to set-up. Anyone else who is free before 11 AM is also encouraged to come help.

Upcoming events: Drag Contest, Feb. 25th

This event is being co-sponsored with Spectrum. We have been allocated $200 for the purposes of acquiring a DJ for this event (which isn't to say, of course, that Spectrum doesn't have a big wad of cash lined up for the occasion).

This is an easy one. All those who are interested in helping out on this event, please attend Spectrum meetings! The first one for this semester is Jan. 24th (for more information, e-mail Winnie - wsl4). This is the only real and effective way Catalyst can help in organizing this event, so do it up!

Upcoming events: Prospects for Peace - "Axis of Evil", Feb. 24th

This event was originally scheduled for April, during Social Justice Week. However, Social Justice Week has been moved to the last week of February and so, accordingly, has this event. We have been allocated $150 for this event.

The basic goal of this is to bring in speakers of several differing viewpoints to discuss what the meaning is behind the designation of of Iran and North Korea as members of the "Axis of Evil." More specifically, how does this change their role to the United States and why are these countries important within our national dialog?

Partially due to the fact that we have significantly less time to arrange speakers, we will be asking several CASE professors to join us. These professors are Vincent McHale and Emery Lee of the political science department, and Rhonda Williams of the history department. In addition, we will be asking Professor Patricia Princehouse to moderate. Jacqui will be contacting Prof. Lee, Tiffany will e-mail Prof. Williams, and Aymy will contact Profs. McHale and Princehouse.

The tentative date/time for this event is 7 PM, February 24th, some place in the Thwing building.

Announcement: Demo. 1/18 concerning construction of Collinwood HS by non-community members

There will be a demonstration tomorrow (Jan. 18th) at Collinwood High School in East Cleveland regarding the nature of the new high school's construction. These construction jobs has gone to workers who are not local residents, effectively transporting tax payer's money out of the neighborhood. Given the impoverished nature of much of this neighborhood, construction jobs such as these are potential extra wages for those poorer residents.

The demonstration will last from 6 AM until noon, however people are welcome to show up at any point during this time. If you need transportation, please contact Joey (his phone number is 650.6671)

The next general meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 26th, at 9 PM in Thwing Spartan Room.

General Meeting, Wednesday, January 12, 2005

(Taken by Aymy)

The complete details of Catalyst's first meeting this semester are posted in the LJ cut below.

The agenda for the Jan. 12 Meeting was as follows:
A. Sub-contracting out of shuttle bus and parking attendant services
B. Organizing travel to DC for Pres. Bush's inauguration Jan. 20th
C. Food and distribution event January 27th
D. Discussion on evolution workshops in local schools
E. Announcement: Spanish speakers needed for tutoring

Sub-contracting out of shuttle bus and parking attendant services

What's Happened So Far:
Upon the university's announcement of its decision to sub-contract the jobs of current shuttle bus drivers and parking lot attendants, Catalyst prepared a resolution supporting that the university ensure the same wages and benefits previously held by these employees. A small group of Catalyst members then visited the third floor of Adelbert on December 20th in order to meet with the university's President Hundert or Provost Anderson, and pass on this resolution. Unfortunately, none of these administrators were available, and the resolution and corresponding information was passed onto their appointment secretary, Diane Farkas. This woman advised that Catalyst send an e-mail in order to schedule an appointment, which Jacqui did almost immediately. Eventually, Ms. Farkas responded, stating that both the school's president and provost are currently unavailable, and suggesting that we speak with Hossein Sadid, the university's Chief Financial and Administrative Officer. Catalyst has talked to him previously concerning health care issues. Jacqui contacted him shortly thereafter. However, Mr. Sadid replied January 4th. Due to technical difficulties, this information went unshared. However, she is in the process of scheduling a meeting with him.

So far, Jacqui has rode the Greenie and has noticed that at least one previous employee has retained his position.

Angela has contracted Cleveland Jobs With Justice, and they are pleased to work with Catalyst on this issue. They are holding their yearly meeting to set the organization's agenda sometime in mid-February, and they have suggested that members of Catalyst attend so that this issue may receive adequate attention in their organizing. For those interested in attendance, Angela will post the exact date of this meeting in the near future.

Next Steps:
Members of Catalyst will be continuously riding and conversing with Greenie drivers, in order to adequately gauge the circumstances at hand. Several have already signed up to ride the Greenies throughout the remainder of this week (Winnie, Lex, Sabina, and the elder Steve), and others are also encouraged to do so. Important points brought up in these discussions should be posted to the MegaPhone, so that they can be discussed by the group at the next meeting.

As stated above, Jacqui will be e-mailing Hossein Sadid for an appointment by the end of this week. After this date is set, we will need people to go.

Josh is writing a letter to the Observer discussing the present situation, in order being to raise student consciousness on the matter.

Organizing travel to DC for Pres. Bush's inauguration Jan. 20th

Due to issues arranging group tickets and buses for rides to the inauguration event, as well as to the general current lack of student awareness of the matter, it is unlikely that we will be attempting to organize a bus of Case students to attend the event. However, we will still be flyering campus, trying to reach as many interested students as possible. This flyer will offer directions, via our website, on how to register for a bus ticket online. Winnie will make this flyer and post it by Thursday, for individual flyering. In addition, there will be 2 group flyerings, covering both sides of campus.

Flyering Schedule:
Friday, Jan. 14th 1:00 PM Meet @ KSL Oval Flyering Residential campuses
Monday, Jan. 17th 9:00 PM After Meeting Flyering Mather and Case Quads

We have heard that there should be extra space available on the buses, and that NOAC will most likely accept registrations until next Wednesday night (Jan. 19th). The younger Steve will be finding out the buses' times of departure and arrival, as well as other details, and posting them in the near future. If anyone gives you money for a bus ticket, bring it to the next general Catalyst meeting (Monday).

Food and distribution event January 27th

The original intention of this event was to organize a luncheon with other campus groups, where we would feed lunch to Case students as well as disseminate information concerning our various organizations. USG has given us $250 for this event.

Winnie (I think) is reserving an available room for this event.

Aymy is planning a trip to the department store to purchase non-food items for this event sometime in the near future.

Tiffany or Winnie are contacting a lengthy list of campus organizations dealing with cultural as well as social justice issues. Hopefully these groups will want to participate in this event.

Exact details concerning food ordering and pick-up, as well as flyering, will be discussed at the next general Catalyst meeting.

Discussion on evolution workshops in local schools

Simon discussed an idea he had previously e-mailed out concerning a local event for January 20th for those of us unable to attend the inauguration event in DC. Given our current administration's negative attitudes towards the teaching of the theory of evolution in American public schools, it has been proposed that we organize workshops on evolution for local students, not only in order to directly build bonds with our surrounding community, but also as a direct and overt means of political protest. Simon currently has several vague sources, and he will be more directly researching these and other contacts, for the next Catalyst meeting.

Due to lack of time, as well as the shortage of Catalyst members who will be here for Jan. 20th, it is unlikely that we would be able to organize adequate evolution workshops, as well as arrange these events with local schools. However, Catalyst is interested in pursuing this endeavor, and we are tentatively setting March 21st as our launching date for such a program.

Announcement: Spanish speakers needed for tutoring

The Case Latino organization, Laianza, is looking for fluent Spanish speakers to tutor doctors of the Cleveland Clinic in Spanish. They are meeting with all those interested Sunday. If you or anyone you know are interested, e-mail Erin (eee3).

Next Meeting: Monday, January 17th, 8 PM Erin/Chris/Jacqui's House (for directions, e-mail eee3)

P.S. - If you get your stuff done, I'll give you a cookie ^_^

General Meeting, Wednesday, October 6, 2004

Taken by Josh Gohlike

Tonight we started off with a review of the VP Debate events. The consensus was that the marches were successful, and it turned out pretty well. If anyone wants to write letters to the editor about the event, feel free.

Some upcoming campaigns were discussed at the meeting. Labor issues was the first talked about. Aymy and Angela talked about the Workers Rights Consortum. If you have any questions about it, contact them. There will also be a meeting at Arabica on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 9 pm to discuss events that can be done this year relating to labor.

An anti-oppression campaign was also suggested by Erin. She'd like to see us network with other groups and expand off of campus in the Universtiy Circle area. Study groups for us were also suggested, so that we could learn about what oppresion really is. A meeting is being planned, Erin will send out possible dates to the list so we can contact her and decide on one.

An event before the election about Iraq has also been suggested. The discussion about this will be next week, so bring ideas to the meeting. There are two things we want to possibly do for Issue 1, the "protection of marriage act". Number 1 is to continue educating the campus. Number 2 is to join other groups. Tri-C is holding a demonstration at some point, and we want other campus groups and people, ACLU, Spectrum, and grad students, to be involved also. Winnie will send out an e-mail about a meeting.

Finally, Erin wants people to help out with Food Not Bombs. Contact her for more info or if you want to help at eee3. Erin is also having a showing of "Bamboozled" at her place next Wednesday.

General Meeting, Wednesday, September 22, 2004

Taken by Josh Gohlike

The showing of Roger & Me will not be shown next Tuesday as planned due to copyright issues. Outsourcing Week will also be postponed until after the VP Debates are over and there is time for discussion.

Ideas for raising awareness about Issue 1, the attempt to ban civil unions of any kind in Ohio, on campus are welcome at any time.

The ACLU is possibly doing a campaign about the Abu Gharib Prison and wants to know if Catalyst wants to co-sponsor.

Here is what is going on with the VP Debates as of now. There will be at least 3 and maybe 4 feeder marches that will conjoin on the KSL Oval at 7:30 the night of the debate.

The question now is whether Catalyst will participate in the Free Speech Zone. We are allowed to have 15 members represent the group and have 5 speakers talk for 15 minutes. The deadline to register for a time is October 1st. If we do something for the zone, we need to decide what.

Jacqui is looking for the Catalyst bull horns, so if anyone knows where they are, let her know.

There will be a meeting at Thwing Saturday at 5 to discuss publicizing what we're doing for the debate.

Monday night at 8:30 there will be a meeting about legal/security/medical issues in the Spartan Room. There will also be a security meeting Tuesday in the Cleveland Room at 7:30.

Communication between the Feeder Marches and the free speech zone is important and I believe it is being taken care of.

Our faithful moderator Jacqui is looking to reserve the Pink Pig for Saturday, October 23 for the Catalyst Retreat.

The Catalyst meeting on October 6 will be in Guilford.

quote of the week

"Probably no American president in history has been so universally hated abroad as Bush: for his bullying unilateralism, his dismissal of international treaties, his reckless indifference to the aspirations of other nations and cultures, his contempt for institutions of world government, and above all for misusing the cause of anti-terrorism in order to unleash an illegal war - and now anarchy - upon a country that like too many others around the world was suffering under a hideous dictatorship but had no hand in the events of 9/11, no weapons of mass destruction and no record of terrorism except as an ally of the United States in a dirty war against Iran."
-John LeCarre
