Has Standard Parking Co. Left You In the Cold?
Update – February 11th, 2005 Catalyst scheduled
another meeting with the CASE administration’s Chief Financial and
Administrative Officer, set for February 11th, to discuss the
discrepancies we’ve encountered in looking into the changes made with
the sub-contracting of Standard Parking Company.
Upon scheduling this meeting,
Catalyst was asked if they had any specific information that we wished to
know, so that Mr. Sadid might adequately prepare. Catalyst then asked that contract
specifics be discussed, both from before and after the decision to
sub-contract. Catalyst then
received a response via e-mail, 2 hours before the actual meeting, stating
that our appointment had been cancelled.

On November
18th, 2004, Case Western and its affiliates announced that it would be
handing over the management of shuttle bus (greenie) and parking lot
operations to Standard Parking Company of Chicago, IL.
These changes took effect January 7th of this year.
The official CASE declaration of the decision (Nov. 18th,
2004):
CASE, UH, UCI to enhance University Circle parking
operations, shuttle bus services with new management company
Observer
article describing the issue (Dec. 2nd, 2004):
UCI Employees Face January Lay-Offs
As
noted in the Observer article above, 101 employees were affected by this
change in management. However,
Case Western stated that all employees who passed the new
management’s ‘qualifications’ would be offered a job
back.
According to the CASE
administration, this re-hiring has occurred, wages and benefits have
remained consistent, and the services which were previously provided are
all in the process of significantly improving. Mr. Sadid, the university’s
Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, has explained to Catalyst
representatives that the decision to sub-contract to Standard Parking was
made only after a careful selection process in which the ‘fiscal,
service, and human aspects’ of the changes were weighed and balanced. He assured us that he had looked at
employees’ wages individually and none had decreased, and that this
was an over-all good move for the University
Circle community. It is also worth noting that whereas
shuttle bus and parking attendant services were previously a cost to the
University, with this change in management they have now become a potential
source for revenue (of course, it is still too early to determine by how
much).

However, as you all may have noticed, service
has decreased -- the Greenies no longer run on time. In addition, through conversations
with employees we have learned that the turn-over rate is increasing, as
are employees’ working hours, and some have reported a pay reduction
(one employee even claimed that with this new change, he was unsure of what
his hourly wage is now).

The rights of workers
must not merely exist on paper.
These rights and protections must necessarily insure the life-blood
of workers directly, if they are to be considered rights at all. Catalyst is committed to helping the
employees of Standard Parking gain these rights in a real and meaningful
manner. We demand that Case Western Reserve University
provide the basis for secure employment, as outlined in the Catalyst
“7 Points of Labor Transformation at CASE,” as well as the
resolution “In Support of CASE Greenie Drivers,” which Catalyst
presented to the university Dec. 20th, 2004. Workers rights are human rights, and
we are dedicated to protecting these rights both at home and abroad.

the employees deserve better wages, shifts, and benefits, please help
support this initiative! Below
is a online petition*, please add your signature and let the CASE
administration know that we will not stand by and allow the rights of
service works on this campus to be eroded. We hope to collect 1000 signatures,
so please, spread the word!!
