Who We Are

BLSA coordinates lectures, programs, and activities for its members, alumni, and the entire law school community. The overall objectives of our organization are:

  1. Articulate and promote the professional needs and goals of black law students.
  2. Foster and encourage an attitude of professional competence.
  3. Focus upon the relationship of black law students to the black community and the American legal system.
  4. Serve as a source of information for black law students and prospective Case Western School of Law students.
  5. Instill in the black law student a greater awareness of commitment to the needs of the black community.
  6. Influence the legal community to bring about meaningful change to meet the needs of the black community.
  7. Ease the transition of first year students to the law school process.
  8. Aid in the recruitment and retention of black law students and professors.
  9. Encourage interaction with other black legal professionals.
  10. Educate the law school community about the culture and experiences of people of African descent.
  11. Establish a strong relationship with other professional and graduate organizations.
  12. Perform community service in the Cleveland community.
  13. Enhance the social and cultural lives of our members.
  14. Do all things necessary and appropriate to accomplish these goals.

These goals are pursued by a variety of methods. BLSA spends a significant amount of time focusing on the recruitment and retention of minority students and faculty. Student quality of life is addressed through career advancement programs, academic development initiatives, speaker series, and programs promoting a stronger, cohesive support network for entering students. Our community service projects include tutoring, fund raising, and collaborative efforts with schools and area youth organizations, as well as other activities.

BLSA continues to prepare black law students for the challenges of law school and the legal profession while continuously striving to create a diverse atmosphere at Case.
