I was amazed at how green the terrain was. This was my first trip to the desert, so I had pictures of sand and rock in my head. There was plenty of that too, of course, but a lot more green than I expected. This was taken right before we started our descent into the Canyon the following day (dressed intelligently in jeans and a sweatshirt). We would be hiking from the North Rim all the way across to the South Rim, a distance of about 25 miles.
